•SD Bioline and BD TBc ID assays rapidly and accurately detected Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex in liquid cultures.•The sensitivity of both SD Bioline and BD TBc ID tests was 100 %.•The specificity of SD Bioline and BD TBc ID tests was 97.9 % and 95.8 %, respectively.
