Impact of a Synchronous Condenser Converted from a Thermal Power Generating Unit on the Voltage Stability of Power System

In high voltage direct current transmission system, AC voltage fluctuations in the converter station threaten the safe and stable operation of the converter, which requires dynamic reactive power support in the AC system to stabilize the voltage and prevent the converter from blocking due to commutation failure. Conversion of existing thermal power generating units to synchronous condenser operation is an economical and convenient solution. Takeing Wuhan substation as a prototype example, this paper analyzes its affect on the system transient voltage stability through digital simulation, and conducts physical dynamic simulation experiments. The results show that the conversion of traditional synchronous generator into synchronous condenser can play a positive role in the transient voltage stability of the system.
