Is there a case for a coal moratorium in Indonesia? Power sector optimization modeling of low-carbon strategies

•A LEAP-OSeMOSYS package is used to model current policy discussions and expected power sector changes in Indonesia.•A coal moratorium beyond current pipeline promotes substantial renewable energy and might be the key culprit in the slow-paced decarbonization of Indonesia.•From a range of carbon taxes investigated, they might not automatically translate into a higher share of low-carbon technologies.•Resources like geothermal and wind energy are key to Indonesia's low-carbon pathway but remain largely underdeveloped, though cost-competitive.
