•γδ T cells infiltrate malignant pleural effusion (MPE) and exhibit high cytotoxicity.•The recruitment of γδ T cells to the pleural cavity in MPE is facilitated by CCL2-CCR2 axis.•C5a enhances the cytotoxicity and chemotaxis of γδ T cells in MPE.•Targeting γδ T cells, especially Vδ2 cells, to revitalize the cytotoxic of them holds promise for control of MPE.
