•Comparative study of 8 stress testing protocols was conducted.•Facile methods to identify predominant degradation mechanisms were proposed.•UPL and atmosphere composition have the most pronounced effect on degradation.•Electrode rotation during AST accelerates the Pt/C degradation almost 2 times.•Optimal testing protocols to assess the catalyst durability were proposed.
