•Mixtures are investigated usingHmE, VmE CpmE UVmE data.•Flory model and Kirkwood-Buff formalism are applied.•Systems are characterized by dispersive interactions and by steric effects.•Orientational effects become weaker as follows: n-alkanone > dialkyl carbonate > n-alkanoate.•Preferential solvation δ110decreases in the order dialkyl carbonate > n-alkanone > n-alkanoate.
