Hypertension (HTN) remains an almost ubiquitous entity as a chronic disease around the world today. Its importance and relevance lie in the fact that it is one of the most common risk factors responsible for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The importance of aggressive blood pressure control is well documented in reduction of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Despite the initial tempering of enthusiasm for renal artery denervation-based treatment of resistant HTN as was experienced after the SYMPLICTY HTN-3 trial, the field continues to move forward after learning important lessons about the procedure itself and trial design. In addition to renal denervation, newer strategies of catheter and device-based treatment of resistant HTN hold promise for this field moving forward. In addition to the treatment of resistant HTN, these strategies are being investigated for their utility in the management of arrhythmias and heart failure. As this technology evolves, the hope is that device-based treatment of HTN will play an important role in the treatment of patients with the disease.
