Abstract
Ultrasound is a versatile, radiation-free imaging technique, with which all organs can be explored, with the partial exception of lungs and bone. Ultrasound has been adopted by many clinicians across several specialties. Thanks to technological advances, portability of ultrasound has increased dramatically, so much so that pocket-sized, hand-held scanners are currently commercially available for relatively modest sums. This has prompted claims that the “ultrasound stethoscope” has finally arrived. This enthusiasm should be tempered as a wide availability has downsides and risks – mainly concerning training and certifications. Nonetheless, it is a reminder of the wide opportunities currently available. The chapter illustrates the broad potential of ultrasound in tropical medicine.
