Abstract
The clinical course of maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) appears to be similar to that of the nonpregnant population. Nevertheless, SARS-CoV-2–related maternal morbidity and mortality are higher in pregnant than nonpregnant individuals. Certain pregnancy-related physiological changes may explain these discrepancies. Data continue to evolve at a rapid pace, and key questions remain to be answered, including the possibility of vertical transmission, fetal and neonatal affects of maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection, maternal care and treatment options, and vaccine safety during pregnancy. Here we present a review of the current literature on SARS-CoV-2–related maternal and perinatal outcomes, vaccine safety in pregnancy, and evidence for protective immunity.
