•Different LSP parameters were designed according to the material properties of 30CrMnSiNi2A high-strength steel.•Variation of the surface structure and hardness was considered with the gradient compressive residual stress comprehensively.•The roles of LSP playing in the improvement of fatigue life were analyzed.
