Abstract
There is currently no blueprint for global public health surveillance. Notwithstanding, this chapter offers a much-needed exploration of the interacting historical and contemporary surveillance narratives that coalesce individuals and countries around accelerating disease detection in the 21st century. Focusing on novel data sources, scalable tools, and analytics, the chapter draws attention to national capacities to access and utilize high-quality data, information-sharing platforms, and appropriate analytics. The authors explore the implications to global health security if rapid information sharing by countries and World Health Organization does not occur when an event constitutes an international health emergency. This chapter concludes with a case study focused on contact tracing initiated with COVID-19.
