Determination of the probiotic properties and optimum growth conditions of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BG24

In this study, the probiotic properties and optimum growth conditions of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BG24 were investigated. L. plantarum BG24 have a high probiotic potential due to its growth at low pH and high bile salt concentrations and its ability to utilize lactose. The adhesion rate of BG24 to Caco-2 cells was 37.51% and it showed resistance to 8 of the tested 19 antibiotics. The highest enzymatic activities of BG24 were found for Leucine arylamidase, β-glucosidase, Valine arylamidase, β-galactosidase and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase. The specific growth rate, doubling time and biomass productivity values of L. plantarum BG24 increased by the enrichment of MRS broth (pH 6.5) with yeast extract (5 g/L). The growth of L. plantarum BG24 was optimized in stirred tank bioreactor and the maximum biomass production of 3.84 g/L were obtained at the optimum levels of process variables (aeration rate 0.05 vvm, agitation speed 479 rpm, inoculation rate 3% and time 18 h).
