Abstract
Abstract This chapter provides select definitions of clinical supervision from different human services professions, including genetic counseling. It summarizes common themes in these definitions, such as processes and functions of supervision. It also describes the tenets, goals, and strategies of the Reciprocal-Engagement Model of Supervision developed to characterize genetic counseling supervision, and it lists empirically derived genetic counseling supervisor competencies. It explains the importance of genetic counselors taking on the role of supervising students, identifies benefits of being in a supervisory role, and offers suggestions for intentionality in the use of one’s supervisory power. This chapter concludes with experiential learning activities to promote self-reflection and deliberate supervision practice.
