摘要
Dissemination of knowledge about cannabis in the medical setting has lagged- behind increasing legalization and cannabis use. There is an unmet need to determine the level of cannabis knowledge of allergists, and whether allergists address potential cannabis allergy in their patients. To address both topics cannabis educational modules and intake questions were developed. A survey regarding knowledge, attitudes, and real-world practice was sent to ACAAI members of whom 219 responded. Based on the results of this survey, six educational modules and intake questions about cannabis were developed to bridge a potential knowledge gap (Table). 75% (n=164) of respondents indicated they are ‘somewhat knowledgeable’ about the respiratory effects and possible allergic reactions to cannabis and 140 (67.6%) indicated they were comfortable speaking to patients about cannabis; however, 23% never asked about cannabis during patient visits. About 36% answered they had seen patients with potential cannabis allergy, with most seeing 1-10 patients (88%). Out of 7 knowledge questions, the mean correct score was 3.5 (SD=1.6). Six CME eligible cannabis education modules and an intake form were created based on the results of this survey. Six modules and intake questions were created for allergists to address the gaps in addressing potential cannabis allergy and asthma in patients consulting allergists. The modules can help allergists recognize the symptoms of cannabis allergy and educate their patients who use cannabis on best routes of administration and the potential beneficial and harmful effects of cannabis.
