Diabetes mellitus increases risk of adverse drug reactions and death in hospitalised older people: the SENATOR trial

Key summary points Aim To compare severity and type of ADRs in hospitalised, multimorbid older people with and without diabetes and to assess the impact of ADRs on mortality, rehospitalisation and length of stay. Findings Patients with diabetes had significantly more ADRs causing hypoglycaemia and acute kidney injury (AKI), with higher mortality that was mediated by drug-related AKI. Message Clinicians should be especially aware of ADRs in people with diabetes, especially diuretics causing AKI.
