摘要
There is emerging concern over the use of social media in the adolescent population, particularly in the context of their worsening mental health and suicidality. However, while there are known effects of social media on self-esteem, mood, and sleep, there is also evidence supporting the benefits of social media. As a result, it is essential to approach adolescents with nuance, and, as caregivers and healthcare providers, to screen as well as support and educate them on how to manage their social media use responsibly and safely. This article presents an overview of the data on the adolescent population surrounding social media usage, its mental health impact, and the risks and benefits of its use. It also provides some tangible approaches clinicians can use to talk to adolescents and screen them.
