Application of synchrophasor technology for microgrid protection

In this chapter, the synchrophasor technology for microgrid protection is discussed. In the present modern grid, the complex microgrid structure demands more attention towards developing fast, efficient, and reliable protection schemes to deal with various faults, and islanding events. In this regard, synchrophasor technology plays a major role due to its ability to measure the time-stamped microgrid data. Therefore, a survey on the synchrophasor technology is carried out and its application for microgrid protection is discussed in this chapter. First, the basic operation of synchrophasor technology is provided, and then, an overview of microgrid protection is discussed. Subsequently, the recent developments of the phasor measurement unit (PMU) application towards microgrid protection are provided, and at last, the possible future scope to overcome the issues associated with this technology is discussed.
