Abstract
While “planetary boundaries” have become the focus of international research, Chinese scholars have been committed to studying the natural carrying capacity (NCC) at both national and regional scales. China's population exploded in the 1970s, and research on how many people the land could support became the basis for family planning decisions. The 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake raised the need for debate on the scale and site selection of post-disaster reconstruction, prompting a renewed focus on NCC research. With the application of NCC research in spatial planning and policies, research on China's NCC continues to flourish. Progress has been made: the expression of the original, remaining, and potential value of NCC, the differentiated carrying capacity evaluation methods oriented towards different territorial functions, the territorial function suitability generated from the extension of NCC, and the monitoring and early warning of regional sustainability based on changes in NCC. It also finds that the distribution of China's water and land resources mismatch, the environmental capacity is overloaded in urbanized areas, and over half of the country has a relatively high ecological sensitivity, posing great challenges to China's future modernization. Other than technological progress and environmental governance, methods of artificially increasing the NCC pose ecological risks.
