Management of cubitus varus deformity with lateral closing wedge osteotomy in resource limited setting.

Abstract
Background:- Supracondylar fractures are most common elbow injuries occurring with its peak in age 5-7 years. Cubitus varus deformity occurs due to malunited supracondylar humerus fractures. Being a three dimensional deformity varus component of the deformity needs correction. Various corrective osteotomies have been mentioned of which lateral closing wedge osteotomy augmented with cross k wiring construct provides an easy alternative to complex osteotomy surgeries. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of lateral closing wedge osteotomy with cross k wire construct. Material & Methods:- In this retrospective plus prospective study of 11 patients with cubitus varus deformity following a supracondylar humerus fracture managed with lateral closing wedge osteotomy with cross k wire construct. Patients were assessed on clinical and radiological improvement in post operative carrying angle, range of motion and better cosmetic outcome. In our study 73% were male and 27 % females with age Results:- range of 6 to 13 years(mean age 8.1years). Pre operative carrying angle ranged from 14-30 degrees (mean 17 degrees) which on correction came upto 5-12 degrees (mean 8 degrees). 63.6% (7) of study population had excellent results while 36.3% (4) patients had good results as per Bellemore criteria. The results in our Conclusion:- study concluded that lateral closing wedge osteotomy with cross k wire construct provides safe, easy and better clinicoradiological outcome compared to various complex corrective osteotomies for cubitus varus deformity
