Abstract The unilateral shift operator S on ℓ2, defined by Sen=en+1 for n⩾0, is of supreme importance in operator theory. Despite its simple appearance in the setting of ℓ2, this operator is best understood with complex analysis. For example, the lattice of S-invariant subspaces is described by seminal work of Riesz, Smirnov, and Beurling on inner functions.
