Application of phyto-nanomedicine for the treatment of different disease conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative disorders

Herbal medicines are part of the traditional medicine system and being used since ancient times. Besides this, phytomedicines have some limitations, such as instability, poor solubility, and bioavailability. Nanotechnology has a multidimensional approach to improving the therapeutic system of phytomedicine by using nanocarriers for drug delivery. Nanocarriers enhance the efficacy of phytomedicine by boosting their circulation, bioavailability, and stability. Phyto-nanomedicines have a promising approach in medical science and demonstrated great potential for the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. The nanoparticles used for drug delivery range between 1 and 100 nm, and the devices or systems include a variety of nanorange materials such as lipids (liposomes), viruses (viral nanoparticles), polymers (polymeric nanoparticles, micelles, or dendrimers), and metallic nanoparticles. In this chapter, we discuss some of the important types of phyto-nanomedicines that are currently being explored in the treatment of diabetes, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.
