Comprehensive management of a premature infant with suspected cystic fibrosis: A case report

This is a case report of a preterm infant with a rare, suspected disease of cystic fibrosis (CF). The objective of the case report is to present the comprehensive care of an infant with suspected CF admitted to the neonatal unit of a tertiary care facility in Northern India, and to understand the psycho-social implications of the disease. Problems related to prematurity, patent ductus arteriosus, high output stoma, neonatal seizures, failure to thrive, and diagnostic evaluation are discussed. Nursing care plan, implementation, and multidisciplinary approach aided in successful discharge. Failure to address the psycho-social issues and the lack of expertise in home management of an infant with CF led to the death of the infant. Providing nursing care, multidisciplinary team involvement, and family-centered care approach and addressing the psychosocial issues are the key essential components for the survival of an infant with a chronic disease like CF.
