•Androgens may influence brain pathophysiology in schizophrenia and mood disorders.•We found increased cortical androgen receptor (AR) mRNA in bipolar disorder.•Cortical AR and 5α-reductase mRNA were positively correlated in bipolar disorder.•Shorter AR CAG trinucleotide repeat length in bipolar disorder than schizophrenia.•This evidence proposes enhanced cortical androgen action via AR in bipolar disorder.
