Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: influence on adipose tissue and metabolic homeostasis

Bariatric surgery is the most effective and durable treatment for obesity with beneficial effects on numerous comorbid conditions resulting from excess adiposity. The two most common procedures, sleeve gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), impart metabolic and physiologic and endocrinologic improvements via shared and distinct mechanisms. This chapter will review the relationships of RYGB on visceral, ectopic, and subcutaneous fat.
