Cyclodextrin in drug delivery

Cyclodextrin (CD)-based polymers have versatile application owing to their unique structural and functional group characteristics. They offer numerous possibilities for chemical modification and inclusion complexation. One of the emerging prospects of CD is in smart stimuli-responsive drug delivery. With their potential to form well-defined aggregated nanostructures, improved drug loading, enhanced solubility, and bioavailability, they are increasingly used in controlled and targeted drug delivery systems. In this chapter, we have highlighted the different types and derivatives of CD, history, and evolution, as well as, their synthesis and properties. We have also detailed the diverse applications of CD in drug delivery, and the challenges in the formulation. The opportunities concerning the formulation of CD-based drug delivery and its clinical applicability are also discussed.
