•SDBS showed excellent picromerite selectivity over halite in a single mineral study.•Picromerite in a real ore was separated by direct flotation using SDBS.•Adsorbed quantity of SDBS on picromerite was far greater than halite.•SDBS chemisorbed on picromerite and formed Mg-O bonds for its selective flotation.
