Economy as an open system

This entry aims to explain the theoretical, methodological, and analytical implications of seeing the economy as an open system. The economic debate about how to define open and closed systems, as well as the differences between mainstream neoclassical economics and ecological economics when it comes to explaining the economic process, are briefly outlined. The features of ecological economics as a theoretical approach to describing the economy as an open system are highlighted in this context.
