摘要
Attention disorders are one of the most common behavioral disorders in the pediatric population, with prevalence shown to be increasing with age. Current research suggests that ADHD may be as common, if not more common, in the athlete population. Clinical features manifest through a variety of symptoms stemming from hyperactivity, impulsivity, or inattention that hinder social, academic, and occupational functioning. Evaluation incorporates a careful history, physical exam, and screening symptom questionnaire if warranted. Treatment integrates both pharmacological and behavioral interventions in a multidisciplinary approach. Special consideration should be brought to the impact of pharmacological intervention for ADHD on conditions such as concussions, cardiovascular disease, and heat illness in the athlete, as well as potential stipulations of pharmacological management in regard to the level of competition for the athlete.
