Simulation learning provides practical basic obstetrical ultrasound skills for clinical learners

Abstract
This was a prospective cohort study of second-year medical students during their obstetrical clerkship. Students participated in one-on-one practice for basic and biometry measurements on a fetal biometry model. Students took a pre- and post-knowledge assessment and were evaluated on clinical basic obstetrical ultrasound and fetal biometry. Lastly, qualitative feedback from the students were analysed based on common themes. 42 students were evaluated. After the simulation, all 42 students were able to perform biometry measurements on the fetal model. Students also had significantly improved obstetrical ultrasound knowledge with the pretest median = 45.0 and post-test median to 83.3 Z = 5.27 p < 0.01. During their six-week clinical rotation, 35 (83.3%) students completed a basic obstetrical ultrasound, and 11 (26.2%) of students completed fetal biometry on consenting patients. Student feedback and faculty evaluation of students' skills was very positive (table 1). Simulation-based didactics with a practical component can be used in obstetrical ultrasound teaching to aid students in gaining practical ultrasound skills. After simulation, the majority of students are confident in trying ultrasound in a clinical setting. In addition, students find simulation-based didactics helpful for their education. Simulation-based teaching gives students skills and confidence in gaining ultrasound skills. The majority of students completed basic ultrasounds, providing a practice skill during their obstetrics rotation.
