eCOA, ePROs and other digital health solutions in movement disorders

The ability to accurately measure clinical phenomena is fundamental to medicine. Movement disorders with varied combinations of multiple motor and non-motor features are a paradigm for more complex multi-domain measurement tools. In this chapter, we introduce the process by which clinical rating scales are currently developed, with a focus on patient-reported outcomes and the incorporation of the patient voice. Digital health technology is revolutionizing the practice of medicine. For its potential to be met, the validation process must build from the “old” analogue landscape and adapt it to the “new” digital world. Electronic versions of clinical rating scales are an example, as well as the development of digital health solutions at point of care. For the latter, we share our experience co-designing a patient-centered tool for self-care in Parkinson's disease.
