A Modified Luo PFC AC-DC Converter with Continuous Input-Output Current Feature for Universal Supply Voltage Range LVEV Chargers

In this work, a modified Luo power factor corrected (MLPFC) AC-DC converter is proposed for a universal supply voltage range (85V RMS - 265V RMS ) electric vehicles (EVs) charging. Proposed MLPFC rectifier exhibits continuous input-output current features, wider operating range capability, and lesser voltage stress across semiconductor devices, compared to conventional Luo or other existing buck-boost PFC rectifiers. Further, the single switch structure, and natural high PF behavior under discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) operation, bring down complexity of its control realization. A comprehensive analysis, including steady state operation, design guidelines, component selection, and control implementation of proposed MLPFC AC-DC converter, is discussed in detail for universal supply and wide DC link voltage (200V DC -400V DC ) conditions. Further, a two-stage charger based on proposed MLPFC rectifier is implemented to realize a universal charging solution for low voltage EVs (LVEVs), i.e., electric-2Ws/3Ws. Developed universal LVEVs charger incorporates a wide battery voltage range (36V - 120V) at its output, fulfilling the charging demands of all classes of LVEVs and their future models. Finally, performance and applicability of proposed PFC rectifier for universal LVEVs charger application are experimentally verified under various operating conditions and validated through relevant results.
