Biochar for Management of Wastewater

Biochar is a stable carbon rich material acquired from thermal decomposition of biomass under anaerobic or limited oxygen conditions. Biochar has emerged as an extremely potential sorbent, and has shown noteworthy advantages for instances, simple preparation methods, extensive sources of feedstock, high stability, enhanced developed pore structure, rich surface functional groups, as well as promising structural and surface properties. The present chapter explores the application of biochar technology in the wastewater treatment, i.e., for the removal of heavy metals, organic pollutants, and inorganic ions, etc., including a brief discussion of the biochar modification methods. Furthermore, the environmental concerns of biochar along with the future research directions for promoting the further application of biochar in practical water and wastewater treatment are also discussed.
