摘要
A reference was omitted from the article ‘Shape-shifting: changing animal morphologies as a response to climatic warming’ when it was published. The corrected text, reference citation, and reference details appear below. The authors apologise profusely for this oversight. On page 1039, paragraph 1, line 1: ‘Studies investigating this link often use museum specimens to assess morphological change over the past decades or century (e.g., [37–39]) and some complement this with long-term field studies (e.g., [40,41,100.Santoro S. et al.Wood mouse body size measurements data in a Spanish protected area over two periods spanning thirty years.Data Brief. 2019; 25: 104024Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (1) Google Scholar]).’ And on page 1040, Table 1: ‘Wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) – Ear length increase [40,100.Santoro S. et al.Wood mouse body size measurements data in a Spanish protected area over two periods spanning thirty years.Data Brief. 2019; 25: 104024Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (1) Google Scholar]’ Shape-shifting: changing animal morphologies as a response to climatic warmingRyding et al.Trends in Ecology & EvolutionSeptember 7, 2021In BriefMany animal appendages, such as avian beaks and mammalian ears, can be used to dissipate excess body heat. Allen’s rule, wherein animals in warmer climates have larger appendages to facilitate more efficient heat exchange, reflects this. We find that there is widespread evidence of ‘shape-shifting’ (changes in appendage size) in endotherms in response to climate change and its associated climatic warming. We re-examine studies of morphological change over time within a thermoregulatory context, finding evidence that temperature can be a strong predictor of morphological change independently of, or combined with, other environmental changes.
