City seascapes

We live on the blue planet and to an increasing extent on the urban planet. Yet there is relatively little effort to connect these agendas. This chapter explores the vision and practice of Ocean Cities: cities that prioritize connections to the marine realm, recognizing the importance of ocean environments to health, wellbeing and meaningful urban life, but also an ethical obligation to work on behalf of marine life and environments. This chapter tackles some of the important planning and policy implications of Ocean Cities, including the many different ways to foster connections and connectedness: for instance, through physical design and planning that connect to water and through creative initiatives to make the marine world more visible in cities.
