Element Failure Correction for Reconfigurable Meta-surface Reflectors

This paper proposes a phase shift method for reconfigurable meta-surface reflectors with failed passive elements, whose reflection phase cannot be controlled. To compensate for a decrease in the received signal power due to element failure, the proposed method adjusts the reflection phase by the same value for all passive elements from the initial reflection phase of each element, which is designed assuming a reflector does not fail. The proposed method provides higher in reflected signal power at the desired angle with less computational complexity than an individual adjustment of the reflection phase of each passive element. Numerical simulations and experimental results show that the proposed element failure correction achieves a higher received signal power than ignoring the element failure.
