Abstract
This paper proposes an Internet of Things (IoT) solution for a voice-controlled smart home. The smart home is the basic building block of a smart city, in which the smart devices are connected to the cloud enabling that the user controls them remotely. The next generation of smart homes moves toward voice-controlled automation where the voice command eliminates the need for physically operating home electronic appliances. In the proposed solution, the message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol is used in the transport of data through the IoT network. Further, the Adafruit IO server is used as an MQTT broker. The users need to provide the voice commands via the Google Assistant app installed on mobile phones, which is being converted to meaningful instruction of operation by using suitable applets in IF-THIS-THEN-THAT (IFTTT) that publish it in the appropriate feed of the broker. The endpoint embedded devices subscribe to the instruction to operate the appliances.
