Abstract
Extensive bowel-related surgery is often necessary to achieve complete cytoreduction in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). These complex surgeries are performed by a variety of surgical subspecialties. Colorectal and general surgeons are often consulted for assistance in these cases. However, several studies have demonstrated that these complex surgeries should be performed by a gynecologic oncologist as they understand the disease-specific behavior of EOC better than their other surgical colleagues. The objective of this study was to compare surgical outcomes between gynecologic oncologists and general surgeons who performed bowel surgery as part of cytoreductive surgery for patients with ovarian cancer.
