Determination of metal ions in Paris polyphylla var. Yunnanensis by ICP-OES and its influence on hemostasis

Metal ions in Chinese herbal medicine have attracted much attention because of their potential harm to the human body and influence on drug efficacy. In this study, the contents of metal ions (including Cu, Ni, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Zn) in Paris polyphylla var. yunnanensis (PY) and its crude extract were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results showed that the method has good linearity, wide determination range, and can accurately determine the contents of various trace metal ions in PY. And the contents of metal ions in PY were higher than that in the crude extract. Then, the hemostatic effect of multiple batches of PY crude extract was studied by intragastric administration in mice, and the effect of metal ions consistent with the actual content of PY on the hemostatic effect was investigated for the first time. The results showed that PY had a better hemostatic effect, and metal ions consistent with PY could inhibit the hemostatic effect.
