Investigation of the combination of microwave heating and calcium alginate capsule rejuvenation healing methods for cold mix asphalt considering the type of compaction effort

•Two mechanisms of self-healing including microwave radiation and rejuvenating calcium alginate capsule were investigated for cold mix asphalt (CMA).•Chemical and micro structural analysis of CMA constituents and additives were conducted.•The fracture tests were performed on the SCB specimens and healing performance of mixtures were evaluated.•Combining the two mentioned healing mechanisms is not as efficient as using them separately in CMA.•Although the rejuvenating capsules weaken the fracture behavior of CMAs, they can greatly improve the healing performance of mixtures.
