•Modified SiO2 has great potential for development as a viscosity reducer.•Modified SiO2 and BSS reduce viscosity synergistically and maintain the stability of the emulsion together.•Viscosity reducer can destroy the structure of heavy components in heavy oil and emulsify heavy oil to reduce the flow resistance.
