摘要
Neurological disorders (NDs) are the leading cause of death and disability in today's world, due to the emerging upgrade in applied science such as longer life expectancy, population growth, improved life standards, and increased risk of chronic illness. Drug and pharmacological interventions are the chief strategies for ailing disorders and often aggravate with side effects after prolonged use. One of the potential novel approaches is the nutrient-based therapy as it involves naturally derived compounds with a therapeutic value and possibly safer in prolonged consumption. Functional foods and bioactive extracts of herbs, vegetables, or fruits have significant neuroprotective effects but an effective way in imparting nontoxic and lesser adverse effects. This paper provides an overview on the role of nutraceutical properties and bioactive compounds of herbal extracts in combating neurological degeneration. Also, it highlights the beneficial impact of flavonoids, phenol, omega-3 fatty acid, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in maintaining the neurological function. These compounds accomplish positive effects by modulating neurotransmission and reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, enhancing the mitochondrial function. In so doing, it can be inferred that the nutraceutical can be an effective vehicle for ameliorative acute and chronic neurological disorders.
