Yarik dudak ve damak deformitesi ust cene kemigini olusturan embriyonik dokularin yetersiz birlesmesi sonucunda gelismektedir. Bu deformite bazen agiz tavaninin hem yumusak hem sert damak bolumlerini icine alabilmek­tedir. Canli dogumlarda yarik dudak ve damak insidansi Asyalilarda 1:470-850 , Siyah irkta 1:1370-5000 ve Beyaz irkta ise 1:775-1000 olarak tahmin edilmektedir. Yarik dudak ve damak deformitesi multifaktoryel eti-yolojiye sahiptir. Deformiteli cocuklarin bakiminda dikkat edilmesi gereken onemli noktalar, beslenme, hava yolunun acik tutulmasi, ortakulak hastaliklari ve eslik edebilecek diger anomalilerdir. Bebek dogumu takiben taburcu edilirken mutlaka bir plastik cerrah tarafindan degerlendirilmelidir. Cocugun tibbi bakiminda bircok tibbi brans rol almaktadir.
