Special Populations

Abstract The epidemiologic focus of HIV in the United States has been in men who have sex with men, particularly in younger men of color. This chapter discusses several other populations experiencing disproportionate access to healthcare, including, adolescents, transgender persons, homeless or displaced individuals, incarcerated individuals, patients in rural settings, immigrants and migrant workers. Learners will review the impact of stigma on healthcare-seeking behavior, treatment adherence, and safe practices.
