The use, application and efficacy of biofloc technology (BFT) in shrimp aquaculture industry: A review

Application of biofloc to shrimp species has many advantages not only in increasing the production by the growth performance improvement and the survival rate increase, but also in increasing the physiological activity in shrimp aquaculture. Recently, the need to introduce biofloc to shrimp culture has emerged, and this review examines the economic feasibility of biofloc through examples of the survival rate and growth rate in shrimp when biofloc is actually introduced into shrimp culture. In addition, the hematological parameters, antioxidant responses and immune responses in shrimp cultured with biofloc were examined to evaluate the health and physiological activity stimulation of biofloc on shrimp. The resistance to diseases of shrimp cultured with biofloc was evaluated, through a challenge test to major specific diseases of shrimp cultured with biofloc. Many studies have reported the productivity improvement, physiological activity stimulation and disease resistance of biofloc in shrimp culture, and this review suggest the standards for applying biofloc to shrimp aquaculture.
