Electrospun nanofibers for angiogenesis strategies

Electrospinning has been considered as a versatile approach to generate a biomimetic construct for tissue engineering applications. Thanks to their physicochemical and biological properties, electrospun nanofibers have opened new directions for promoted angiogenesis and neovascularization which has a vital role for successful tissue repair and regeneration. Nanofibrous scaffolds are mostly utilized to incorporate bioactive molecules (e.g., proangiogenic growth factors and cytokines) as well as seeding stem/progenitor cells to exert proangiogenic functions. The proangiogenic capacity of electrospun scaffolds were examined both in vitro and in vivo and proved for further applications in repair and regeneration of various hard and soft tissues.
