Abstract
Today, most of the oil fields in Russia and particularly, in Tatarstan, are classified as mature fields exhibiting oil production decline and water production growth. To reduce watercut and to stimulate oil production, water shut-off operations are performed using polymer systems, since polymers provide higher efficiency compared to coarse cement slurries. This paper presents the results of research efforts and field trials aimed at new water shut-off technologies that have been developed during the last decade. The authors review the concept of these technologies and their applicability. A water shut-off technique using vinyl polymer relies on injection of VITAM agent and its crosslinking in formation waters having various dissolved solids. A water shut-off method for carbonate formations using polyaluminium chloride provides blocking of water flow paths with gel resulting from contact between aqueous gel solution and carbonate rocks. A water shut-off method using water-swellable elastomers involves injection of powdered acrylic copolymer suspension which partially swells in water and blocks water pathways. A new technology has been developed for remediation of production casing leaks using fiber cement slurries in case of excessive intake capacity, and using micro-cement slurries with good fluid properties in case of 0.2-1.0 m 3 /(hr.MPa) intake rate. This paper also presents number of applications of the above-mentioned technologies.
