Miscellaneous antibiotics

The discovery and mass production of antibiotics has allowed for considerable improvement in modern medicine. Unfortunately, the misuse and overuse of these drugs by both humans and veterinarians have led to the development of multi-, extensive and pan-drug resistant bacteria around the world. Moreover, no new antimicrobial drug class has been discovered since lipopeptides in 1987, which were approved for use in 2003. To treat highly resistant pathogens, older drug classes have been repurposed. The following chapter touches on both commonly used antimicrobials in veterinary medicine and some last-resort drugs.
