Encephalitis

Abstract Encephalitis is an inflammatory process affecting the parenchyma of the brain, most commonly diffusely, and therefore leading to a clouding of consciousness early in its course. At a gross pathologic level, encephalitis is generally nonpurulent and is distinguished from cerebritis, which tends to be overtly purulent on gross inspection. Encephalitis is the preferred term for viral or autoimmune inflammation of the brain.
