Investigating the co-occurrence of Neanderthals and modern humans in Belgium through direct radiocarbon dating of bone implements

•This study presents compound specific dates on bone implements.•Results show a hiatus between the end of the Mousterian and the early Aurignacian.•These are in opposition to admixture patterns observed in Eastern regions.•Population dynamics requires a regional approach based on robust chronometric data.
