•Carbonate rocks of Jhamarkotra Formation, Aravalli Supergroup (2.3–1.9 Ga) analysed.•Lomagundi type positive δ13Ccarb > 4 ‰ VPDB (maximum up to 6.86 ‰) reported.•Several distinct negative δ13Ccarb values (up to −6.14 ‰ VPDB) occur.•Productivity and fluctuations in organic matter are identified cause of variations.
